Highland School District

Widely known for its outstanding teaching, Highland Community Unit School District includes one high school, one middle school and five different elementary schools: Grantfork Upper Elementary, Alhambra Primary, Highland Primary and New Douglas Mid-Elementary.  Classroom sizes remain small, giving teachers the opportunity to help each student reach his or her potential.

Highland School District boasts a staff of highly qualified, experienced teachers; on average teachers at Highland School District have about 14 years experience. Students with special circumstances can receive counseling from the district’s highly trained counselors and therapists. In addition to small class size and an expert teaching staff, the Highland School District has the support of the whole community. The first thing you will notice upon moving to Highland is the strong sense of community pride. Civic projects, volunteer organizations and various clubs work together to improve the overall quality of life in Highland. The Highland Arts Council, for example, is dedicated to expanding the role of the arts in education and helping local artists locate venues.

Highland School District is lucky to have an enthusiastic PTO organization, band booster club, and mutually beneficial relationships with many civic organizations that annually contribute time, money, and labor for the benefit of the students. This August, for instance, students will gather for a “Back to School Party” hosted at the Highland Community Pool. In order to ease the transition from elementary to high school, Highland Middle School students are assigned to a “black” or “red” team. These teams enable students to build working relationships with their teachers and fellow students while encouraging fun academic competition.

Highland High School has around 1000 students in attendance, with class sizes of roughly 20 students per teacher. Parents and students can easily access important class information by logging in to the school website. Outside of a packed class schedule, Highland High School students find time to participate in many different sports teams; student clubs are also popular, such as Book Club, Future Medical Careers Club, Student Council, French Club  to name a few. The Highland Music Program, which includes concert, marching, and symphonic bands as well as a color guard, is a great way for young musicians to make friends and see their hard work pay off at athletic events or at local and state competitions.
