Edwardsville School District
Located in the beautiful city of Edwardsville, a city named among the top ten towns for families in the US by Family Circle, the Edwardsville Community Unit School District includes six elementary schools, four intermediate schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. Serving 7,600 students in aggregate, the Edwardsville Community Unit School district began as the tall multi-grade school house Dale School, named after the esteemed Judge Dale. As time went on, various schoolhouses were built, razed and rebuilt in response to the community’s growing population. In 1950, the Edwardsville Community Unit School District was formed through the consolidation of more than 25 smaller schools located in the area. Money Magazine listed the Edwardsville Community Unit District number seven among the “Top 100 Schools in Towns You Can Afford” in 1996.

Students enjoy the art and culture of a big city combined with the unflagging support of a close-knit community. Not only does the school district benefit from overwhelming community support, but the town is also home to Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIUE), and the university serves as a field site for college students training to become teachers. Students and teachers alike enjoy waves of enthusiastic, energetic volunteers, while providing invaluable hands-on training for new teachers. Because of the long established collaboration between both two institutions, students enrolled at Edwardsville get special rates to college sports events, gallery openings, concerts and other enriching activities. The Edwardsville Community School District uses the same core curricula in all of its elementary schools. Students participate in language arts, mathematics, science, social science, physical development, health, Spanish, and fine arts. Third through fifth grade students with an interest in music can join the orchestra or band at Cassens, Columbus, Woodland and Worden intermediate schools. Throughout the year students learn the importance of volunteering through a variety of charitable activities, and fundraisers. Young athletes can participate in school sports, sign up for summer sports camps offered through SIUE and LCCC, or watch the SIUE Cougars dominate just minutes from their own field or court. Most importantly, the Edwardsville Community Unit School District takes a proactive approach to college and career preparation. Advanced coursework is available at Liberty and Lincoln Middle School as well as at Edwardsville High School. Students at Edwardsville High School may elect to take advanced placement exams; the school offers a wide variety of advanced placement courses. Qualifying high school students may also participate in a series of supervised work experience situations, or advanced vocational classes through the Collinsville Area Vocational Center. The Lewis Clark Community College opened the N.O. Nelson Campus in 2003 bringing career training and technical classes directly to EHS students. Rather than scrambling for training after school, students can earn vocational certifications while earning their high school diploma. In 2010, 80% of graduating seniors planned to attend a four-year college, while 15% planned to attend a two-year or technical program.
